The USNS Robert E. Peary (T-AKE-5) is the fifth of six Lewis and Clark-class dry cargo/ammunition ships of the United States Navy. She was built at the General Dynamics NASSCO shipyard in San Diego and launched on 10 February 2010. The ship is named for Arctic explorer Robert Edwin Peary, who led the first expedition to the geographic North Pole in 1909. It is the second U.S. Navy ship named for Arctic Expedition Arctic Explorer Robert Edwin Peary. The USNS Robert E. Peary is a 689-foot dry cargo / ammunition ship and is equipped with two large cargo holds, each capable of carrying 600 tons of ammunition or other dry cargo. The shipā€™s cargo-handling system is designed to provide maximum operational flexibility in loading and offloading cargo. It has a cargo capacity of over 10,000 tons, and can carry up to 500 twenty-foot containers. The ship is also equipped with a state-of-the-art Helicopter Deck Landing System, which enables the vessel to safely receive helicopters carrying cargo and passengers.The USNS Robert E. Peary is owned and operated by the Navyā€™s Military Sealift Command. The shipā€™s primary mission is to supply fuel, ammunition, food, and other supplies to Navy ships, submarines and aircraft at sea. It is also used for research and development operations, training exercises, and humanitarian missions. The ship is crewed by both civilian and military personnel. The civilian crew is supplemented by a contingent of Navy personnel who provide medical services, communications support and navigation.In 2015, the USNS Robert E. Peary was part of a U.S. Navy humanitarian mission to South and Central American countries, delivering vital humanitarian supplies and medical equipment. In 2019, the USNS Robert E. Peary responded to a call for help from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in response to the wood fires plaguing Australia. The USNS Robert E. Peary delivered food and water to remote areas affected by the fires and destruction. The USNS Robert E. Peary T-AKE-5 is a Lewis and Clark-class dry cargo ship commissioned by the United States Navy in May 2018. This vessel was named after Robert Edwin Peary, an Arctic explorer who is credited with leading the first documented expedition to reach the North Pole. The USNS Robert E. Peary is part of the Navy's underway replenishment and sealift program, providing logistics support to deployed naval forces. The USNS Robert E. Peary is 748 feet long, displaces approximately 41,000 metric tons and sails at a top speed of 20 knots. The vessel is equipped with state-of-the-art navigation and communications systems, and can transport over 8,400 metric tons of supplies and personnel. It is also outfitted with cranes and an Advanced Enclosed Mast System (AEMS), allowing it to connect with other vessels in order to transfer cargo at sea.The USNS Robert E. Peary is an important part of the Navy's logistics support capabilities and a tribute to Robert Edwin Peary's historic achievement.
